Slottsskogen is a place for relaxation, recreation and outdoor activities. The mix between planned park and natural forest creates a fantastic environment for everything from running to cosy picnics. In and close to the park are cafés, playgrounds and much more.
Much of the park is given over to natural parkland with native trees such as linden, beech, maple and various species of oak. The Dawn Redwood and stately Serbian spruce are a few examples of the more exotic plants on display. The azaleas are not native but have become famous in Slottskogen.
The petting zoo and pony rides are open from April to September. The park zoo is open all year round and the admission is free. Slottsskogen also hosts events, big and small, throughout the year. One of the main ones being the music festival Way out west.
The area now known as Slottsskogen has a long history. The land was used for pasture in the 17th century, belonging to the then existing castle Älvsborgs Slott. The name Slottsskogen was first used in the 18th century when the middle-class of Gothenburg gained access to the land.
As Gothenburg grew so did the need for recreational space for all the people of Gothenburg and not just the middle-class. August Kobb, head of the city council ath the time, took on the mission to transform Slottsskogen into a proper park. August Kobb is commemorated by the foot of Säldamsbacken.
Inspired by Hyde Park in London and the Skansen park in Stockholm, Slottsskogen became a park with winding paths, vast lawns and a lively zoo. The park officially opened in 1874 and has been a Gothenburg favourite ever since.
