Magical Colors - Hand Making Japanese Handkerchiefs

Magical Colors Hand Making Japanese Handkerchiefs

So I was exploring a craft expo in Nagoya the other day. When I came across some people creating something with fantastic colors!

It turns out they are making handkerchiefs using a magical technique called “marbling” マーブリング. Some of the earliest forms of this technique in Japan is suminagashi (墨流し), which means 'floating ink' in Japanese, and can be dated back to the 12th-century in Kyoto. In marbling, a shallow tray is filled with a special solution, and various kinds of ink or paint colors are applied to the surface and float. The colors form circular shapes and are added until the surface is covered. Once covered, tools are used to disturb the circles and make patters in the colors. White cloth is then carefully lowered onto the pattern, which is quickly absorbed, becoming permanent. A quick wash to set the colors, and then a quick iron to dry it out. Ready to go!
