The Addition Of Zinc To Hydroxychloroquine And Azithromycin: Improved Outcomes in Hospitalized COVID

In this video we will discuss a study that compared HCQ and Azithro alone versus HCQ, Azithro, and Zn in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in New York. We will start by discussing the mechanisms of HCQ and Azithromycin, including HCQ's potential role as a Zn ionophore. What does this mean? There have been lots of studies that have looked at HCQ +/- Azithromycin, but very few studies that have also included Zinc. These researchers compared these two treatment regimens to one another. What they found initially was a significant decrease in mortality, ICU admission, ventilator requirements, and time to discharge. When they controlled for the time in which the therapies were given though, the effect did shrink. What persisted was a decrease in mortality and increase in patients discharged who received HCQ, Azithro, and Zn, especially if they were not in the intensive care unit. A possible indication that starting these therapies early, during that presumed viral phase, may hold potential efficacy. With this being said, as a retrospective study there were many limitations.
