S21Ep8: DIY Farewell Alaska Bison Hunt! Unforgettable!!

Dustin drew a tag with less than .5% odds for the Farewell, AK Bison!

To say the trip was epic could be an understatement.

We flew the 2 hour flight from Anchorage to Farewell in our Supercubs on skis. On the way, we saw the lead 2 mushers of the Iditarod Dog Race. After doing 30 minutes of aerial recon, we spotted around 200 bison. There are approximately 400-500 bison in the entire herd. They were transplanted in 1965 from the Delta Junction herd, which originated from 23 bison transplanted from Montana in 1928. The first night we witnessed the northern lights dancing across the sky in -25F degree temperatures. The first day we could hunt we put on over 7 miles with the backcountry skis in pursuit of a bull. Dustin made a great shot on a big herd bull bison! We played cribbage to our heart's desire on a bad weather day for flying. Then we flew formation in the cubs over some of the gnarliest mountains you can imagine in Alaska on our way home.

Epic would be an understatement! Unforgettable would be accurate.
