Coronavirus outbreak: Berlin protesters mark May Day, defying ban on public gatherings

Berlin protesters demonstrated in the German capital on Friday to mark May Day while defying a ban to hold gatherings with more than 20 people and ignoring social distancing rules put in place due to the coronavirus pandemic.

At the city's landmark, the Brandenburg Gate, a handful of far-right so-called "Reichsbuerger" or "Reich Citizens" gathered, closely watched by police.

Thilo Cablitz, spokesman for Berlin police, said officers were "talking to the people, we are making loudspeaker announcements ... and only if everything else fails we will take measures and carefully move people away."

Some people were seen being carried away by police.

In previous years, Berlin has seen peaceful May Day demonstrations turn into nights of street violence with broken windows and cars set on fire.
