The World's Second Subway | Istanbul, built in 1875 | F2 Historical Tunnel Funicular Line

Tünel (Tunnel) in Istanbul is Turkey's first subway but also the second oldest subway of the World. Tunel, the underground funicular was opened 1875. It's connecting Karaköy with the Istiklal Street. The French engineer Eugene Henri Gavand observed human traffic going back and forth between Galata which was center of social life and Pera where the heart of trade and banking used to beat and considered an alternative way to Yüksekkaldırım and Galip Dede Street. Henri Gavand went to the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Aziz Han to ask an approval for his project to build a funicular to connect two centers. On 10 June 1869 Sultan Abdülaziz granted Gavand with a concession to build the railway. Tünel was inaugurated on January 17, 1875. The funicular is operating today as the F2 (Karaköy - Beyoğlu) Historical Tunnel Funicular Line.
