THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA’s JEREMY DEPOYSTER On “Color Decay”: “It's a Monumental Moment in Our Career”

The Devil Wears Prada is one of those bands that seem to always be moving forward, always writing, always touring. The band has been around since 2005 (17 years!), with their first full-length coming out in 2006. Since then, they’ve established themselves as one of the most successful and foundational bands of the genre. Albums with a cult following such as “Plagues” and “With Roots Above And Branches Below” still hold up to this day, and the musical exploration they’ve gone on since then has been seriously interesting to observe.

Albums such as “Transit Blues”, “8:18” and also the EP “Space” were where the band explored alternate versions of themselves, branching out into new sounds and personalities that resonated well with their fans. They ultimately showed us, however, that there was a bit of soul searching going on. Some bands never do this, and go stale. Other stick to their formula and everything works out. For The Devil Wears Prada, they were on some sort of identity revelation mission, and it was, in retrospect, seriously fun to follow those releases and almost be with them on that journey, as many fans did.

The 2010 “Zombie” EP, proving to be some of, if not their absolute heaviest material, became a highlight release that fans became obsessed with. The ‘sequel’, “ZII”, was a perfect following on from the original, and you can read my review of that here: (https://www.sonicperspectives.com/album-reviews/the-devil-wears-prada-zii/). It shows that the heaviness and melodic power that the band is undoubtedly capable of, is what the people loved the most. The bone-rattling breakdowns, the soaring choruses which lift you up before another insanely heavy section intensifies gravity, and of course the downright entertaining post-apocalyptic zombie narrative.

In this interview, Sonic Perspectives writer Josh Muncke sat down with guitarist and clean vocalist Jeremy DePoyster to dive into the brand new album “Color Decay”. They talk about the feelings of resolve when finding the band’s true sound, as well as how writing this album differed from their previous efforts. They also speak about balancing a successful music career with family and personal life, and lots more. Enjoy the chat!
