MICHAEL STARR On STEEL PANTHER's New Album "On The Prowl": "Writing During the Pandemic Was Easier"

"Everybody shout: heavy metal's back". The lyrics on Steel Panther's first ever song, "Death to All But Metal", still ring true after so many years, and they do so especially when a new album by these kings of debauchery comes out.

"On the Prowl", the new release from the Los Angeles-based quartet, came out on February 24th, and carries all the elements that made them famous: 80's hard rock with in-your-face lyrics, anthemic choruses and a slap in the face of political correctness. Through its thirteen tracks, Steel Panther addresses modern themes such as the damage done by Instagram filters, cryptocurrencies, Tinder and Snapchat. Male insecurities are explored on "Is My Dick Enough" and "Sleeping on the Rollaway", while human anatomy is addressed on "Magical Vagina" and "All that And More".

Recording the follow up to 2019's "Heavy Metal Rules" during the pandemic meant that a new process had to be in place. Due to the isolation caused by COVID, the band had to do writing sessions using online meeting apps. However, the material of "On the Prowl" is on par, if not better than their recent releases. The band stayed active during the lockdowns and did a few livestreams - one of which was reviewed by us. On the second half of 2021 they returned to the stage and to the traditionally hectic touring schedule.

Sonic Perspectives collaborator Rodrigo Altaf took some time to discuss the new album with Steel Panther's singer Michael Starr. They spoke about the recording process, the preparations for the upcoming tour, how many girls he has slept with and many more raunchy subjects.
