Candi Staton ~ Young Hearts Run Free 1976 Disco Purrfection Version

Candi Staton had 13 top 20 R&B hits during her career, putting her at the top of that list over Millie Jackson (11), Carla Thomas (10) and Betty Wright (10) as of 1993. "Young Hearts Run Free" was her most successful single ever, peaking at #1 R&B but petered out at #20 on the Hot 100. Regardless of that chart performance, the song has become a disco anthem over the years. From 1969 to 1974, she collaborated with producer Rick Hall who emphasized her southern soul with "I'd Rather Be A Young Man's Sweetheart", "Stand By Your Man" and "As Long As He Takes Care Of Home". Clarence Carter put in a word with Hall about Staton and signed her after paying $1500.00 to buy out her contract with Unity Records. After her first hit with Hall, she married Carter. Candi relates that Dave Crawford was getting ready to record her and was interested in what was going on in her life. At the time, she was in an abusive relationship that was hard for her to end. Crawford told her "I'm gonna write you a song that's gonna last forever". Truer words have never been spoken. This perfect melding of joyous disco music and bittersweet lyrics sung by an expressive Candi still rules the dance floor. She remembers the day it took to record all the songs for the album, since she was on the road and had to get to her next gig. She was in great vocal form and recorded her vocals with Ray Parker Jr, Jay Graydon, Jake Ashford, Sonny Burke, Michael Boddicker and Sylvester Rivers playing behind her. Backup vocals were handled by Deniece Williams and Rochelle Runnells, a member of Stargard (Which Way Is Up).
