Elton John & Kiki Dee ~ Don't Go Breaking My Heart 1976 Disco Purrfection Version

I loved this one the very first time I heard it during the summer of 1976. It debuted at #66 on the chart along with Bee Gees "You Should Be Dancing" at #67, Boz Scaggs "Lowdown" at #82, and Cliff Richard "Devil Woman" at #87. Six weeks later it was #1 in the nation. Ann Orson and Carte Blanche wrote a winner with "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" as recorded by Elton John and Kiki Dee, spending four weeks at #1 on the Hot 100. Oddly enough, the single never appeared on an Elton John album of original songs, though it did show up on his 1976 Greatest Hits Volume II later that year. Elton had released two albums in 1975, "Captain Fantastic" and then "Rock Of The Westies" which had the spirited #1 single "Island Girl". Taking a step back, he began working with Bernie Taupin on a moody, relatively tranquil album to be titled "Blue Moves". During the recording sessions for that album, the duo wrote a pop song that was very catchy, but not something that would fit on "Blue Moves". Adopting the Ann Orson (Elton John) and Carte Blanche (Bernie Taupin) monikers, they completed the song and they decided that it would be a duet. They first approached Dusty Springfield, who was unable to record due to an undisclosed illness. Kiki Dee had been signed to Motown, but languished on the label until she met British Motown Executive John Reid, who introduced her to Elton John. That resulted in her signing to Rocket Records and her first outing "I've Got The Music In Me" #12, in 1974. Her follow up singles did not reach the top 40. Elton decided that Kiki would be the ideal partner for this one off single. The song entered the charts at #66 on July 3, 1976 and hit #1 on August 7.
