We all long for things to be set right. And though we’re tempted to think of justice and peace in individual, familial, or tribal terms, there’s a deeper, God-given yearning for every tribe, tongue, and nation to experience together the meeting place of mercy and truth and witness justice and peace “kiss” (Ps. 85:10), ushering in what the Hebrew scriptures refer to as shalom.

Shalom is a state of pervasive peace, wholeness or completion that will ultimately include all of creation; a time when the lion lays down alongside the lamb (Is. 11:6), valleys are raised and mountains leveled (Is.40:4), rulers are humbled and the humble exalted (Luke 1:52), every tear is wiped away and pain and death are no more (Rev. 21:4). Then, people of all walks of life will truly be seen and valued as equal, as all the kingdoms of this world come under the rule and reign of the kingdom of God.

In the midst of our many divisions, there’s a reconciled world to come—a world of peace, joy, and love without end—for which we can confidently hope, into which we’re presently invited to experience a foretaste of, and toward which we may shine as light for the nations. May this hope Jesus has secured for us continue to bring us together in spite of social, cultural, and political differences. The gospel of Jesus Christ is an invitation to life with God and one another that transcends manmade divisions.

Our hope for this song is that it might help clarify and purify our longings for justice and peace and inspire us in our work together toward this glorious, secure inheritance that is ours in Christ.
