How to properly install a water softener drain into a sewer pipe

I see this done wrong all the time. Often, the water softener drain is installed into the plumbing wastewater drain utilizing what's referred to a cross-connection (https://inspectapedia.com/plumbing/Plumbing_Cross_Connections.php) in the plumbing trade, which is when you connect your drinking water system to your wastewater system directly. Obviously this can be an issue ;) This also applies to any type of water treatment system that utilizes a drain. Backflow preventers can also be used.
