The book of Ezra recounts events that led to the return of the Jews to Jerusalem after 70 years of exile in Babylon. As soon as they entered Jerusalem, they built an altar and later rebuilt the Temple.

Chapters 1-6 describe the emotions that overcame the Israelites when building the Second Temple after Solomon's temple had been destroyed. “With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the LORD: ‘He is good; his love to Israel endures forever.’ And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.”

Cyrus, king of Persia, gives Ezra a royal decree authorizing him to make the return along with all the Jewish exiles who wished to return with him. Although Ezra appears on the scene in chapter 7, his decree from King Cyrus fulfills God's words through Jeremiah.
