Assam Cabinet approves Uniform Civil Code in first meeting of new government

The Assam Cabinet on Wednesday approved the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state during the first cabinet meeting of the new government, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announcing that a bill will be introduced in the Assembly on May 26.

Sarma said the Assam model has been customised to protect tribal communities and religious customs, with all tribal groups kept outside the purview of the UCC.

The proposed law will cover issues such as minimum age of marriage, compulsory registration of marriages and divorces, abolition of polygamy, inheritance rights for women and regulation of live-in relationships.

The Cabinet also approved a task force to create two lakh jobs over the next five years and announced austerity measures, including a freeze on new government vehicle purchases for six months.
