Ukraine’s ambassador to India calls for an end to war
(28 Feb 2022) Ukraine's ambassador to India on Monday appealed to the international community to "exert pressure" on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the offensive on his country.
Igor Polikha spoke to reporters at the Ukraine embassy in New Delhi, where people have left flowers, toys and messages of solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
He said the Russian plan of "blitzkrieg" had been thwarted and that Russia was experiencing "unpredictable" and "unprecedented" casualties.
More than 5,300 Russian soldiers and officers had been either killed or wounded already, he told reporters, citing "official estimates".
Journalists bombarded Polikha with questions about the safe evacuation of Indian students and nationals stuck in Ukraine.
Polikha said efforts were being made to help them to leave but blamed Russia for the issue of foreign nationals being stuck in the war-stricken country.
India along with China and the United Arab Emirates, abstained in an 11-1 vote on a UN Security Council resolution demanding that Moscow immediately stop its attack on Ukraine.
