Regensburg is Germany's finest example of a well-preserved major German city from the Middle Ages.The history of Regensburg goes back over 1800 years. The Romans founded it. Their fortification, built at the confluence of the rivers Regen and Danube, the Roman legionaries called "Castra Regina".
About a thousand medieval houses and other architectural monuments of this historical period have been preserved in the city. In 2006 they were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The historical part of the city has changed little outwardly over the past centuries. World War II spared Regensburg. The buildings of the XIII-XIV centuries, very unusual for their time, are perfectly preserved here.
