P0171 Bad Fuel pump

Saturn 2004 2.2L I4 Vue, After 100k the fuel pump is bad. It starts going bad earlier then that, though. You will hear like two pops come out of the muffler shortly after start, first sign. Long term fuel trim is high. System too lean under load. No vacuum leaks, EVAP Valve is fine, O2 sensor works. Try to find a '06 Equinox to replace. But be careful of which generation of Vue you have. If you have the first generation Vue then you need a first generation fuel pump, otherwise the damn thing just won't fit. Pressure should be 50-60psi with a holding pressure after the end turns off. Once the fuel pump was replaced I got at P0172 code which is the opposite of the P0171. Don't panic it will go away on its own before 150 miles after replacement. There is gas stored in the catalytic converter from the original code. Its just a matter of time before all the gas gets evaporated out. But if it does take longer than that, then chances are you'll need a new catalytic converter as it is now damaged by the excess gas. One more thing, after replacement of the new fuel pump it is common that the EVAP valve goes back, P0496 ,really cheap and easy fix, though.
