Red Bull Reveal Their Plan If They Don't Keep Albon

Red Bull’s current driver Alex Albon’s position in the team has been called into question by many during this season. While initially, Christian Horner and Helmut Marko, the team’s principal and advisor respectively, had affirmed their faith in Albon, they had recently confirmed that they are open to looking at other drivers, even the ones that are outside the Red Bull Program. Christian Horner has now once again reiterated this viewpoint while also revealing what Albon needs to do

Albon Has To Claim Red Bull Seat

Horner started off by stating that they want Albon to justify his place in the team

“We want Alex to claim that seat and basically justify that there is no need to look at any other alternative than Alex. I think everybody in the team wants to see him do that”

He further elaborated on the timeframe that Albon has in front of him to do so

“He's had a couple of difficult weekends. So, he needs to bounce back here [Portimao] I think, and particularly Imola, with a strong, strong weekend from start to finish”

“So that's our focus. That's our objective. As I say, he's a popular member of the team. But we need two cars closer together in order to fight the Mercedes, and that's what we've got to do. That's our target”

He then explained why they will look outside their program if they had to replace Albon

“If we had to look at a different solution, then obviously we would have to look outside of the Red Bull pool of drivers, simply because there’s not one available that we would look to put in. There’s some quality drivers, obviously, on the market that could be unemployed for next year”

Albon, meanwhile, gave his thoughts on this development

“I am confident in my own abilities. Their [Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg] names don't really mean anything to me. I'm just focused on my job and working with the team to get the best results I can”

He further elaborated on this to sum up the situation

“As a driver, you approach each weekend the same. There's no real difference to it and for me I've just got to do my job. Focus on my performance, there's not too much to comment about it”

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton has admitted that they’ve “got a great car but you have to drive the nuts off of it to pull out a lap”

Christian Horner has stated that the more they “look, there really only is one option that works and that would be to agree something with Honda where” Red Bull “could take on the [intellectual property] for the Honda engine”

He also added that “it’s absolutely fundamental that there has to be an engine freeze with these power units until the introduction of the new engines” for them to go down this route

He also divulged that “Renault don’t really want to supply” them because “their aspirations as a team obviously have changed”

The FIA has explained that they appoint “stewards with relevant Formula 1 experience and expertise to carry out this function at the highest level”

They also added that they do “not discriminate in this process on the basis of views expressed outside their function as FIA stewards”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff pointed out that Williams’ George Russell “is a star of the future who remains unbeaten by his team mates in Formula 1”

He, however, accepts that “there’s obviously a financial reality that” he “cannot judge at all and it’s absolutely the judgement of the new owners and Simon to decide what they want to do going forward”
Will George Russell lose his Williams seat for 2021?
