Horner Downplays Gasly’s Performances
After finishing fifth in Portimao, AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly finds himself just one point behind Red Bull’s Alex Albon. This, in the eyes of many has further justified a promotion for Gasly to the senior Red Bull team once again. Team principal Christian Horner, however, doesn’t seem too impressed as he has now divulged to Sky Sports

Horner Not Dazzled By Gasly Performance
Horner began by accepting that Gasly did a great job in Portimao
“I think Pierre's doing a great job and he drove another great race today, some great moves, and you can see his confidence is there”
He then explained why Gasly has been performing well
“That AlphaTauri car is an easier car to drive, and it was an easier car last year when Alex moved across - that was one of the first comments he made”
Horner, however, isn’t too impressed and pointed out why
“But I've got [every] reason to think that if the tables were turned, it would probably be exactly the same situation”
He further elaborated on why he thinks Albon would be at the same level as Gasly if he was driving the AlphaTauri
“I think Alex in that [AlphaTauri] car would probably perform equal to how Pierre is at the moment. We have so much information on these drivers and the characteristics of our car are very different”
“That's something that Alex in certain conditions is struggling with, as Pierre did 12 months ago. That's something we probably need to work on”
Gasly meanwhile summed up his situation
“At the end of the day, it is Red Bull who decides what they want to do with the drivers and I can only make sure I perform. Nowadays, however, performance is not the only term for getting a seat in F1”

Racing Point’s Sergio Perez has stated that the “the decision is getting closer, as” they “are now in the final stages” of the negotiations for his future
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen hopes that they “can catch up with” Mercedes “as soon as possible, but they are not stupid”
He also knows that Red Bull has “a lot of good people, but so do” Mercedes which is a “great motivation for” Red Bull “to beat them”
Christian Horner feels that “the reality is there's not many races left in the season. You get to that time in the year when you have to make a choice for next year”
He admitted that they “have to make a choice about” the second seat at Red Bull “in the next few weeks” and that they “know what options there are”
He also thinks “any of the drivers who are now free will prefer Red Bull over any other team that is still free, so” he assumes “they are waiting to see what” Red Bull’s “decision is”
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff pointed out that he has “been in Formula 1 for 12 years and every year” they “hear that F1 is ill”
He, however, feels that “the truth is that there will always be difficult moments, so it is important that” they “see it positively”
He further stated that they “have three engine manufacturers now and that's more than in most seasons. There may even be a new one in the future”
He also feels that 92 wins for his driver Lewis Hamilton is “almost a surreal amount of wins”
Lewis, meanwhile, “could never have dreamed of being where” he is “today” and added that he “didn't have a magic ball when” he “chose to come to this team and partner with great people”
His teammate Valtteri Bottas has stated that he “just had no pace” at Portimao and he doesn’t “understand why, but no pace”
Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko accepts that “in 2020” they “won't succeed, but in 2021” they “want to finally attack Mercedes and make Max [Verstappen] the world champion”
He also revealed that they have asked “Max for his opinion on” a teammate
Pirelli F1 boss Mario Isola was “very happy with the performance of all three compounds on a demanding circuit that the teams didn’t know well”
Will Hamilton’s F1 wins record ever be broken?
