RARE GOLDEN EGG Rolex Oyster Perpetual Air-King super precision ref 5516, cal 1530 from 1960

Rare Rolex Golden egg Oyster Perpetual Air-King super precision from 1960.
This is a rare and gorgeous beauty in excellent all original condition! It’s a so-called Golden Egg, which was Rolex’ answer to the success of the gold plated Omega Constellation. Rolex launched their golden egg models in the 1950’s, but instead of a 20 micron thick gold layer which most other manufacturers used (including Omega), Rolex used a 240 (!) micron thick gold cap layer on top of a steel case. That’s 12 times thicker than other manufacturers! The gold cap also wasn’t plated, but it was pressure formed, hammered, and soldered into place, with this gorgeous watch as a result.
This is a rare ref 5516, which is very difficult to find, especially in a condition this nice! The original champagne dial is in excellent condition, with light patina, it really pops nicely, especially with the gorgeous alpha hands. The golden egg case is in great condition, with signs of use, and light wear on the edges. The crown is original Rolex signed.
The watch is a ref 5516, powered by an automatic cal 1530 from 1960. Service history unknown, but it works well and keeps good time. There’s play to the rotor, so would recommend a service. It measures 34,2mm diameter without crown, and 43,3mm from lug to lug.
