The Dagestani poet Rasul Gamzatov was inspired to write a poem after hearing the story of a statue of a girl holding a paper crane at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. “A girl who had leukemia after being exposed to radiation from the atomic bomb folded a thousand origami cranes in hopes that she would get better, but that girl’s dream could not come true.” The memory of the paper cranes representing innocent victims of war haunted Gamjatov for months. He was inspired to write a poem that begins with “Seldom I think about all those fallen soldiers who never returned from the bloody battles…”

The poem was originally written in the Avar language, Gamjatov's native language, and there are several versions surrounding the initial phrase. The famous 1968 Russian translation was created by the prominent Russian poet and translator Naum Grebnev and was melodized in 1969, making it one of the world's best-known World War II ballads in Russian.

In Russian, "Jurabli { Журавли}" is a well-known song in Korea. As the title song of the SBS drama “Hourglass”, which first dealt with the 1980 Gwangju Democratization Movement, it has been loved by many people since it aired for 6 months, starting on January 9, 1995.

Who are today's white cranes in the song referring to? They could be young Russian soldiers caught up in the Ukrainian war or could be Ukrainian warriors fighting to defend their homeland. What about the hearts of their moms?

다게스탄의 시인 감자토프가 히로시마 평화기념관에 있는 종이학을 들고 있는 소녀 동상 사연을 듣고 시를 쓰게 되었답니다. “원자폭탄의 방사능에 피폭돼서 백혈병에 걸린 소녀가 병이 낫기를 바라면서 천 마리의 종이학을 접었지만 그 소녀의 꿈은 이루어지지 못했다”는. 무고한 전쟁의 희생자들을 상징하는 그 종이학의 기억은 몇 달 동안 감자토프를 괴롭혔고, “나는 가끔 병사들을 생각하지, 피로 물든 전쟁터에서 돌아오지 못한 병사들이…” 라는 구절로 시작하는 시를 쓰도록 영감을 받았습니다.

이 시는 원래 감자토프의 모국어인 Avar 언어로 작성되었으며 초기 문구를 둘러싼 여러 버전이 있습니다. 그 유명한 1968년 러시아어 번역은 저명한 러시아 시인이자 번역가인 나움 그레브네프에 의해 만들어졌고 1969년에 멜로디가 붙여져 전 세계에서 가장 잘 알려진 러시아어로 된 제2차 세계 대전 발라드 중 하나가 되었습니다.

러시아어로 주라블리 { Журавли}는 대한민국에도 잘 알려진 곡입니다. 1980년의 광주 민주화운동을 당시 처음으로 다룬 SBS드라마 “모래시계”의 타이틀곡으로 1995년 1월 9일을 시작으로 6개월간 방송된 이래, 많은 사람들의 사랑을 받고 있습니다.

노래 속에 나오는 오늘날의 백학은 누구를 가리키는 것일까요? 그들은 우크라이나 전쟁에 휩쓸린 러시아의 어린 병사들일 수도 있고, 조국을 지키기 위해 싸우고 있는 우크라이나 전사들일 수도 있습니다. 과연 그들 어머니들의 마음은 어떨까요?
