Vehicle Code 10803 VC -- Buying or possessing vehicles with tampered VINs
Vehicle Code 10803 makes it a crime to buy or possess vehicles (or parts of vehicles) when you know the Vehicle Identification Number VIN has been removed, altered or tampered with, and your purpose is to misrepresent the identification of the vehicle.
This section is aimed at prosecuting so-called "chop shops" or operations that disassemble stolen vehicles for the purpose of reselling them or their parts.
Vehicle 10803 VC is a wobbler, meaning it could be filed as either a misdemeanor or a felony. As a felony it can carry punishment of up to 3 years in county jail or state prison.
But their are a number of legal defenses a criminal lawyer can assert for you, including taking the position that you were not aware that the VIN numbers had been altered or removed.
