Constipation Awareness Month helpful tips part 2.
As a naturopath I stress to my clients the importance of daily, easy to pass (no straining) and formed stools. So here are two more valuable (some might say obvious/ but do you honestly follow these every day?!) tips:
1. Hydration: 2L (up to 3L for active taller people but no more) fluids daily of which most should be hydrating sources like water, herbal and fruit caffeine free teas and well diluted cordials. Keep caffeinated teas and coffees to a minimum but they do count towards total fluid levels.
2. Fibre especially soluble fibre. There’s too much emphasis on the “roughage” insoluble fibre but focusing on just this misses on the importance of soluble fibre. This draws water to the stool, creates softer bulk and eases passage. Ensure you’re eating a selection of carrots, apples, avocados, sweet potato, pulses, porridge oats and pears.
I’ll also add here that kiwi fruits plums and prunes have been found to have a stimulating effect on the bowel so a daily serving can be helpful.
