INDUSTRY ON PARADE AMERICAN STEEL INDUSTRY AUTO ASSEMBLY STEEL CURTAIN WALLS USS SARGO 90244a

This black and white film is one of a 1950-1960 television series Industry on Parade, produced by the National Association of Manufacturers; an Arthur Lodge Productions Inc. This is a single segment about the many ways steel was being used in the 1950s. An ingot of white-hot steel is passed through a rolling mill, flattening it out (:43-1:23). A parking lot is filled with 1950s cars. The inside of an automobile assembly plant is shown, with the front of an Edsel station wagon dropped onto its chassis (1:24-2:06). The steel girding of a skyscraper is shown. A white-hot piece of steel is inserted into a giant press to form a railroad car wheel. Dow metal drums are made. Refinery pipes and electrical power lines are shown (2:07-3:23). Farm equipment, battleships, and tanks are large steel users (3:25-3:54). A female worker works on pistons rings, manufactured at the Philadelphia Wilkening Manufacturing Co. Horseshoes are shown being mechanically produced. A milk vending machine, air conditioning units, and washing machines are assembled (3:56-5:37). The Detroit Cross Company employs huge multi-tasking machinery, shown in use, as the assembly line moves (5:39-6:45). Nose pieces of air-to-air missiles are extruded. An atomic power plant is under construction in Shippingport, Pennsylvania (6:47-7:18). A New York skyscraper has stainless steel curtain walls. The decorative panels are shown being installed. Steel and glass partitions are assembled into cube walls and steel desks are assembled by Etna Steel Productions Corp. workers. Ironing boards are assembled in Milwaukee (7:20-8:48). Steel is incorporated into concrete. Hydraulic jacks are used to test how many pounds of pressure can be applied before the concrete collapses (8:50-9:25). The powder metallurgy process is shown. A welder in 1950s welding mask works at hard facing worn equipment at the American Brake Shoe Company. Alloying on spring coiling machines is shown at the Connecticut Torrington Manufacturing Company. The coil exudes from the machinery in a close-up (9:27-11:12). Steel ingots are remelted in a vacuum at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation. A worker turns dials on the electric current control machine. A finished cylinder is lifted by crane (11:13-11:46). A stainless steel lance is lowered into an oxygen furnace. A worker stands in front of wall with a large control console of dials and switches (11:48-12:33). The 1957 USS Sargo missile carrying nuclear-powered submarine is christened and launched at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard (12:35-13:04.)
