Violent protests 'domestic acts of terror': Trump
US President Donald Trump has condemned violent protests across the country, describing them as "domestic acts of terror" during a press conference at the White House.
The President told mayors and governors across the United States to deploy the National Guard and "dominate the streets" to deal with growing violence after George Floyd was killed in police custody.
"All Americans were rightly sickened and revolted by the brutal death of George Floyd," Mr Trump said.
The President said his administration was "fully committed" to seeing justice served for Mr Floyd and his family.
"The biggest victims of the rioting are peace-loving citizens in our poorest communities and as their President, I will fight to keep them safe. I will protect you," he said.
"Our nation has been gripped by professional anarchists, violent mobs, arsonists, looters, criminals, ANTIFA and others."
Mr Trump chastised a number of state and local governments who he said "failed to take necessary action to safeguard their residents".
"Small business owners have seen their dreams utterly destroyed, New York's finest have been hit in the face with bricks, brave nurses who have battled the virus are afraid to leave their homes, a police precinct has been overrun, the Lincoln Memorial and the WWII Memorial have been vandalised, one of our most historic churches was set ablaze," he said.
"A federal officer in California - an African-American enforcement hero - was shot and killed.
"These are not acts of peaceful protest, these are acts of domestic terror."
The President directed state mayors and governors to establishment an "overwhelming enforcement presence" until the violence was quelled.
If a city or state refused to act, the President said he would deploy the US military to "quickly solve the problem for them".
