This historic film "Ekofisk City at Sea" from Phillips Petroleum shows the story of the development of the Ekofisk Oil Field, one of the North Sea oil projects. The film begins in 1962 with a group of engineers planning the project. At 2:00 Oslo, Norway and surrounding areas are shown. At 2:34 engineers and their families move to Stavanger, Norway in 1965. At 2:57 plotters and paper tape computers work to compile information about the project. At 3:20, the 1967 launch of the Ocean Viking exploration vessel is shown. At 3:36 the offshore drilling platform is shown in operation. At 4:30 the drilling ring is shown in operation and at 4:43, results of drilling are assessed in a lab. At 5:20 drilling is suspended. In Bartlesville, Oklahoma executives consider abandoning the project due to lack of progress. At 5:51 the drilling rig makes another attempt. On December 23, 1969, Phillips Petroleum – now ConocoPhillips – informed the Norwegian government that it had discovered Ekofisk – one of the largest offshore oil fields ever found. At 6:44 a map of the Ekofisk well field is shown. At 7:30 planning to retrieve the oil from two miles down is shown with various types of jackup drilling rigs being considered for use. The construction of the linked Ekofisk drilling platforms and hotel living platform is shown next. At 11:50 a tug struggles in the North Sea waves. At 12:03 Stavanger Fjord a gigantic oil storage tank is shown being completed. At 14:14 it is lowered into place on the short of the North Sea. At 14:30 a huge bridge section of the platform is shown being replaced after it was damaged during installation. At 15:11 the oil pipeline is shown being installed on the beach near Teesside Refinery. The underwater oil pipeline is shown being built at 15:40. At 16:30 an underwater television camera system is used to monitor the installation of the pipeline. At 18:30 the film ends with images of the setting sun and the incredible installation known as Ekofisk.

Ekofisk is an oil field in block 2/4 of the Norwegian sector of the North Sea about 320 km (200 mi) southwest of Stavanger. Discovered in 1969 by Phillips Petroleum Company, it remains one of the most important oil fields in the North Sea. This was the first discovery of oil after the drilling of over 200 exploration wells in the North Sea "triggered" by the Groningen gas field discovery. In 1971, Phillips started producing directly to tankers from four subsea wells. Oil production is planned to continue until at least 2050.

Ekofisk reservoir consists of Cod, Ekofisk, West Ekofisk, Tor, Albuskjell, Eldfisk, Edda and Embla oil fields. The Ekofisk Center is a vast complex of platforms and structures creating a transportation hub also for surrounding fields such as Valhall, Hod, Gyda, Ula, Statfjord, Heimdal, Tommeliten and Gullfaks. The whole complex consists of 29 platforms. Produced oil is transported by the Norpipe oil pipeline to the Teesside Refinery in England. Natural gas is transported by the Norpipe gas pipeline to Emden in Germany.

Norpipe is the undersea oil and natural gas pipelines system in the North Sea. It supplies oil from the Norwegian Ekofisk and associated fields in the North Sea to the United Kingdom and natural gas to Germany.

The Teesside Refinery was an oil refinery and chemical plant situated just south of Seaton Carew on the River Tees in County Durham. In 2000, it was bought by Petroplus from ICI and Phillips Petroleum Company. Refining was suspended in 2009, although the site continues to operate as a terminal and storage facility.
