When a function has a vertical asymptote at x=a, the limit as x approaches a will be positive infinity from both sides, negative infinity from both sides, or positive infinity from one side and negative infinity from the other side.

But when a function has a horizontal asymptote at y=b, then the limit as x approaches positive or negative infinity will be equal to b. We also call this the end behavior of the function, so the end behavior would be that the function is approaching b.

Make sure you understand where the infinite values appear in the limits for both vertical and horizontal asymptotes before you take the AP test.
