Wild Goose Chase | The Frustrations of Wildlife Photography | Nikon Z7 & 500mm f/5.6E PF VR

Photographing a migrant flock of pink-footed geese in my local area... this started out as a morning out with the camera to make a quick video, but quickly developed into a much longer, and often frustrating, project to try and catch up with them!

Every year a large flock of pink-footed geese (Anser brachyrhynchus) use to the fields around our town as roosting sites during the winter when they come over from Iceland. I set out on a blustery morning in November to get some images, but the geese were too far away and the weather was only getting worse. What started out as a quick hour out to see the geese and make a video ended up being a project over several months... It seemed like every time I thought I knew where the geese would be or how I could get close to them, they'd do something different / go somewhere else! While this was a great example of how wildlife photography can be really frustrating, it is also a good example of how working at a project over a longer time results in a deeper knowledge of the subject and their behaviour, and that part is really rewarding.

The project is far from over and I will continue looking for the geese over the next month until they leave back to Iceland, but realistically I had to end the video somewhere! However, I will be back next Autumn for another attempt, armed with the knowledge gained from this year, so stay tuned for that..!

Sorry it's been so long since I uploaded a video - with our baby daughter and a full time job, the amount of free time I have for editing is next to nothing at the moment, but I will really try to not leave such a huge gap before I get the next one out 😊
