Bermuda Vacation 1956 – Flying Boats & Bermudiana Hotel Grounds

The Bermudiana Hotel featured in this film was built in 1924 & burned to the ground in September of 1958. This fire was the genesis of a full-time fire service for Bermuda.
Bermudiana Hotel grounds – pool and exterior, Pitts Bay road, Barr’s Bay Park (with a glimpse of “Scarborough” now the site of the Bermuda Fire and Marine Insurance building) and Hamilton Harbor from Hotel. Outside tables being set for service on the front terrace.
On the water, Hamilton and the Paget & Warwick shore front. The US Naval Air Station, Morgan’s Island Southampton – Naval ships at anchor and LOTS of flying boats (Martin P5M-2 Marlin, Martin P6M SeaMaster?) on apron and in George’s Bay – landing in the Little Sound.
Cruise past Dockyard and a stop in Somerset. Back to Hamilton, past the Hamilton Princess and Bermudiana hotels. Royal Bermuda Yacht Club with no camber & the Bank of Bermuda.
Back at the hotel and a stroll around the gardens.
Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, Southampton “22027 Visitors climbed to the top during year 1955” (seems to many!) a stop the aquarium & Flatt’s Inlet.
Front Street, Hamilton. Queen of Bermuda at dock. Church Street outside the Cathedral. Queen Street, police directing traffic at Front Street.
St. Theresa’s Cathedral (Elliot Street & Cedar Avenue) and Nuns at the gate of the old Mount St Agnus Academy.
A stop at the beach and back to the hotel on The Bermudiana’s Horse drawn carriage.
Departure from Kindley Field airport – Pan American Airlines Douglass DC 6B & a Lockheed L- 1049 Super Constellation on the apron. Outside of La Guardia Airport, New York.
