FURIOUS truckers face off with police as many remain stranded in Dover

Frustrated lorry drivers stranded at the UK port of Dover clashed with police and expressed anger at the conditions they’ve been left in. Some of the drivers have been stuck for days after France closed the border to prevent a new variant of coronavirus detected in Britain from spreading across the channel.

About 50 drivers walked up the gridlocked road leading up to the port in Dover before engaging in minor scuffles with officers. Some chanted “we want to go home” while others complained of receiving no help from the authorities including food or toilet facilities.

France says the flow of traffic can now resume, but only drivers who have a negative Covid test will be able to cross. It may take days to clear the backlog of around 4,000 trucks, not least because of the amount of testing that has to be carried out.
