Cominciamo la nostra rassegna dedicata all'aria finale dell'0pera con la versione di Ester Mazzoleni, tra i maggiori soprani drammatici documentati dal disco, giustamente celebre e celebrata per il fuoco interpretativo che sapeva infondere alle proprie esecuzioni. L'incisione dimostra che, oltre al fuoco o fervore che dir si voglia, c'era molto altro, da un saldo controllo della prima ottava (essenziale in una pagina in cui abbondano i repentini passaggi dal grave all'acuto, utilizzati per restituire la disperazione e l'alterazione mentale del personaggio) alla capacità di variare le dinamiche a ogni battuta o quasi (splendida, in particolare, nella parte conclusiva dell'aria, la smorzatura sul si bemolle acuto, che corona "improvvidO le pene", 2:03), all'assoluto splendore del registro acuto, che anche nella precarietà dell'incisione restituisce l'idea di una voce capace di sovrastare agevolmente l'orchestra, anche la più nutrita. La Mazzoleni oltre ad essere notevole stilista aveva morbidezza e squillo trascendentale (2:29). Si capisce perché la Burzio ne temesse il confronto. Disco bellissimo.

The phrasing, the phrasing!! Listening to it makes me feel I'm on a swing ("On the rosy wings of love"), peaking and then dipping down with those liquid portamenti (D'a _ mor sull'a _ _ li ro _ se _ e), bridges that are like cognac and milk at once...

"D'amor sull'ali rosee...the veritable apotheosis of bel canto with its demands for vocal beauty, agility and range", in fact, notes Charles Osborne. And, as a melodist, Julian Budden demonstrates this example which shows Verdi as "the equal of Bellini".

Leonora attempts to free him (Aria: D'amor sull'ali rosee / "On the rosy wings of love"; Chorus & Duet: Miserere / "Lord, thy mercy on this soul") by begging di Luna for mercy and offers herself in place of her lover...

"Ester Mazzoleni (1883-1982) studied in Trieste and Pisa and made her debut at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome as Leonora in "Il Trovatore" in 1906. After this performance she always appeared in famous Italian stages with great success. In 1908 she appeared at La Scala as Giulia in ''La Vestale'' by Spontini, in 1909 in the title role of Cherubini's ''Medea''. In 1913, during the first festival at the Arena of Verona, together with Giovanni Zenatello she appeared in Verdi's ''Aida''. In 1914 she performed at the Teatro San Carlo, Napoli as Valentina in ''Gli Ugonotti'' by Meyerbeer. In 1923 she performed again in Verona, but this time in ''Norma''. After finishing stage career she worked since 1926 as a pedagogue in Palermo."

Fonotipia Records was an Italian gramophone record label established in 1904. They recorded most of the great Italian singers of the first two decades of the 20th century and the recording quality was high for its day... Fonotipia continued to operate into the electrical recording era, which commenced in 1925-26, by which time the company had been absorbed into Odeon records.
