Beniamino Gigli, Elisabeth Rethberg, and Ezio Pinza in the trio "Qual voluttà trascorrere" from Verdi's forgotten crusader opera "I Lombardi alla Prima Crociata". Conductor Rosario Bourdon. Recorded New York, 31 December 1930. Victor / HMV 78rpm.

Gigli's smoothness of legato gives this performance a dreamy quality, and the way these three great voices blend is just breathtaking.
A long-breath line is carried through in intention, while individual words and phrase segments are given fully expressive, even passionate, value.

I particularly love the fermata on the second climax:

In ciel......... t'atten _ _ do ...

Il ciel........... (fermata)' ah.......' il ciel.......' dischiu _ _ _ so a te?

Il violino solista di fatto genera il magnifico terzetto "Qual voluttà trascorrere" in cui in un crescendo continuo, e nell'ardito accavallarsi architettonico di voci, archi, fiati e violino solista, si giunge al climax dell'atto con il risultato di una tensione larga commossa, magniloquente.

ACT 3: La Conversione

A grotto near the River Jordan. After a violin prelude, Giselda and Oronte appear. Oronte has been wounded and Giselda bitterly laments God's cruelty. The hermit appears. He tells Giselda and Oronte that their love is sinful but may be purified by Oronte's conversion and baptism. The hermit completes the baptism, and Giselda laments as Oronte dies from his wounds, promising to see her in heaven (Trio: Qual voluttà trascorrere):

ORONTE.
What new delight is cheering me,
Madly my heart is beating,
Fainting I fly for aid, to thee
Dearest! for my life is fleeting.

GISELDA.
Ah! do not leave me, I follow thee!
Break not the hope I cherish!
Together in sorrow did we live.
Le us now together perish!

ORONTE.
Embrace me! Ah new enchantment!
Weep for me! thy tears yet may save me!

GISELDA.
Ah! thou whom I loved so fondly.
For whom my life has striven
Pray that the pitying angels
May join our loves in heav'n...

ORONTE.
In heav'n my spirit thee to await...
I wait thee, I faint, love! in heav'n.

È delitto il nostro amor!

Scende insolito... vigor!
Qual voluttà trascorrere
Sento di vena... in vena!

Più non mi reggo... aitami...
Io ti discerno appena!
T'accosta!... oh nuovo incanto!
Bagnami col tuo pianto...
In ciel ti attendo... affrettati...
Tu... lo schiudesti a me.

GISELDA:
Deh non morire! attendimi,
O mia perduta speme!
Vissuti insiem nei triboli,
Noi moriremo insieme.
Donna che t'amò tanto
Puoi tu lasciar nel pianto?
Perché mi vietan gli angeli
Il ciel dischiuso a te?
