Module 7 lecture1b Angular Momentum Eigenstates
Module 7 lecture 1 part II, angular momentum eigenstates, Physics 253 Quantum Mechanics, Georgetown University, Fall 2020
In this lecture, we determine the simultaneous eigenstates of total squared angular momentum and the z-component of angular momentum, using purely algebraic methods and logical arguments. We also determine how these simultaneous eigenstates transform when the raising and lowering operators are applied onto them. We discover that angular momentum must be an integer or a half-odd integer. The normalization of the states is also worked out. Finally, the expression of the angular momentum states in terms of powers of raising operators acting on the lowest-weight state is also worked out.
