Jelly Roll Morton: Conductor And Not Also Pianist In Many Of July 1929 His Orchestra Recordings.

Throughout his career Jelly Roll Morton always remained faithful to his conception of Jazz without following its evolution and fashions, except in the recordings made during the 3 sessions of July 1929, in which he introduced more musicians and more solos, all typical elements of the great orchestras of the time, even appearing in many of those recordings only as conductor and not also as pianist, having himself replaced at the piano by a Cuban pianist, Rod Rodriguez, certainly not at his height and having himself portrayed with baton in hand in the orchestra photo from that July 1929. This change was not successful in the sense that the July 1929 recordings are the least valid recordings of Morton.
