U.S.A.A.F. Airfields In Southern Tuscany (Italy) During WWII.
During WWII as the U.S .5th Army advanced towards northern Italy, The United States Army Air Force (U.S.A.A.F.) built airfields in the liberated territories, in which the Allies positioned their aircrafts. In southern Tuscany the following airfields were set up :
(in order from south to north)
- 01:10 Orbetello - (June 1944 – August 1944)
- 04:10 Ombrone - (June 1944 - 1944)
- 06:27 Grosseto – (June 1944 – 15 July 1945)
- 14:34 Follonica – (June 1944 - 1944)
- 17:53 Piombino - (July 1944 – 1944).
During July 1944 at Follonica Airfield also the Beaufighter VI aircrafts of the
No. 600 Squadron R.A.F. (Night fighter squadron) and at Piombino Airfield also the Supermarine Spitfire IX aircrafts of the No. 43, 72, 93, 111 Squadrons R.A.F. were located.

Regarding the construction of Piombino Airfield, it should be noted that the U.S.A.A.F. deemed it more convenient than the reconstruction of the already existing and nearby Venturina (Campiglia Marittima) Airfield (16.25 km NNE of Piombino), destroyed by the retreating Germans and which was one of the Airfields used by their transport aircrafts (Junkers Ju 52 and Messerschmitt Me 323) and escort fighters employed for the evacuation of Sardinia and Corsic on September – October 1943.
[Clarification: Ombrone Airfield was a landing ground and not a runway. The squadrons of the 47th Bombardment Group positioned at Ombrone Airfield were the 84th, 85th, 86th and 97th Bombardment Squadrons (June 23 – July 11, 1944) and the squadrons of 57th Fighter Group were the 64th, 65th and 66th Fighter Squadrons (Sept. 17 - Sept. 25, 1944) - 04:10].
The music is:
''The U.S. Air Force - March'' (Robert McArthur Crawford - 1938).
