HAWAIIAN CAPERS (ELECTRIC VERSION) - 'KING' BENNIE NAWAHI
I hardly know anything about 'King' Bennie Nawahi's electric version of "Hawaiian Capers". It's been recorded in 1949 and was included on the Yazoo vinyl LP "Hot Hawaiian Guitar" (1986). Bennie was accompanied by his brother Joe on bass fiddle (the LP lists him incorrectly as ukulele player) and stepson Norman Petersen on guitar - so this must have been the 'Nawahi Trio' which toured through clubs at the time and is said to have made only a few recordings during its existence. But neither could I find any info as to where and when exactly the recording was done, nor on any other discographical details. And taking into consideration that the transferred shellac record is noticeably crackly, I'm pretty sure that the original must be distinctly rare, pricey and hard to find.
Be that as it may - although Bennie's style of playing had changed somewhat by his switch from the acoustic National steel to an electric instrument, his licks were still amazing and a challenge for any competitor. Despite also having been a famed ukulele player, mandolinist and harmonica blower, he will always be remembered first and foremost as the blistering virtuoso "tearing it up" on the Hawaiian steel guitar. Please enjoy!
