Aspendos, one of the most impressive and best-preserved ancient cities in Pamphylia, located near Serik, Antalya Province 🇹🇷

🏛️ Aspendos (Ancient City in Serik, Antalya)
📍 Location

About 8 km east of Serik and 47 km from Antalya city center.

Situated along the Eurymedon River (today’s Köprüçay), which was navigable in antiquity.

Famous worldwide for its Roman theatre, one of the best preserved in existence.

🕰️ Historical Overview
1. Foundation and Early History (~1000 BC or earlier)

Believed to have been founded by Greeks from Argos (possibly colonists from Achaea) around 1000 BC.

Some sources link it to a local Anatolian people, the Pamphylians, descendants of a blend of Greek settlers and native tribes.

According to legend, the name Aspendos derives from a local hero “Azpandos” or from the old Anatolian language meaning “hill city.”

2. Persian and Hellenistic Periods (6th–2nd centuries BC)

Came under Persian control after the 6th century BC when Cyrus the Great conquered Anatolia.

Known to have paid taxes to the Persian Empire, yet retained considerable autonomy.

After Alexander the Great’s conquest (333 BC), Aspendos at first surrendered but later rebelled; Alexander then re-captured the city and stationed a garrison there.

Following Alexander’s death, Aspendos shifted between the control of the Seleucids, Ptolemies, and later Pergamon.

3. Roman Era (133 BC–4th century AD)

Bequeathed to Rome in 133 BC with the Kingdom of Pergamon.

Under Roman rule, Aspendos flourished — becoming a rich trading and cultural center.

The theatre, aqueduct, stadium, and agora date mainly to this period (2nd century AD).

The aqueduct, nearly 1 km long with high arches, brought water from the hills — a marvel of Roman engineering.

4. Byzantine and Seljuk Periods (5th–13th century AD)

During Byzantine times, Aspendos remained inhabited and became a bishopric.

After Arab raids and earthquakes, the city gradually declined.

In the 13th century, the Seljuk Turks restored the theatre and used it as a caravanserai (inn for travelers).

The Seljuks added a palace-like façade and Islamic decorative motifs that are still visible inside.

The theatre has been partially restored and is now used for concerts and festivals, notably the Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival each summer.
