Ken McNabb: How to Fix a Buddy Sour or Jigging Horse on the Trail
Join horseman Ken McNabb and his son Trent on a trip to Arizona as Ken showcases collection exercises to help build confidence in his mare Ruby on the trail.
Horse Jigging- If you have a horse who likes to “jig” on the trail, the hard truth is that your horse does this as a result of you not controlling their emotions.
KEY CHARACTER NOTE: Never look at failure as if you lost something, but look at it as if the horse makes a mistake and it is a better opportunity for you to fix something together.
When Working Trail Collection Exercises
1. Use other riders who you trust to help you motivate your horse. Ride with people who you know will help you.
2. Use these collection exercises to help keep your horse focused.
3. Learn how to control your horse’s emotions even when others ride out of sight. Your horse will learn to relax and know it is all okay. The herd mentality says that “if I am strong enough to move your feet, then I am strong enough to protect you.” Horses in a herd look for the horse who is strong enough to move their feet and that is who they look to for herd protection. You must learn to be that leader for your horse.
4. You build trust with your horse when you get them to pay attention to you, even when their heart might be somewhere else (example, with other horses who have rode away and out of sight).
5. Work your horse when other horses are around. When the other horses ride off as part of the exercise, let your horse be relaxed and released.
6. My horses have the ability to respond softly to me immediately. This is so crucial for safety on the trail.
