Ken McNabb: Cattle Sorting & Trailer Loading Exercises for You & Your Horse

In this episode of Discovering the Horseman Within, Ken takes a crew to practice, learn and grow by getting their horses out of the arena and to the ranch for some fun sorting and trailer loading cattle. Join Ken in this episode to learn some great group exercises that you can practice at home by setting up a situation for you and your horses to continue to learn.

Important Reminder When Sorting Cattle: Do not take your horses nose off of the cow.

Watch as Ken creates an exercise for the group to hold a small herd of cattle and individually sort out cattle that Ken needs separated. Notice how Ken has one person be the “out-gate”. As each rider takes a turn Ken is sure to instruct them to let the holding crew do their work and worry about your job at hand. Trust your team!

As riders are working these tasks at hand their horses are naturally learning how to handle uneven and different terrains and creating an all-around better ranch horse. The horses are learning how to read the terrain, read the cow and pay attention to their rider. Cattle instinctually feel pressure that you apply and make a change. Learn when and where to place your horse, when and where to apply, release or hold pressure for a successful day’s work.
