VIA Identyfing and Supporting children with special needs.

This is an inclusive school. In this school, the principals, teachers, psychologists and parents work in a multidisciplinary way with all the students regardless their educational needs.

15% of the students of this school have a special educational need that affect their learning in one way or another. Some students find difficult reading and writing skills, others solving math problems, others have difficulties to socialize or serious behavior problems. There are students who easily lose attention and find it difficult to organize. There are even students who are so capable that they get bored in their classes.

The school is having a hard time knowing what their needs are, who needs specialized support, who needs support only from teachers and parents, and who can support others. And they don't always know how they can support them ...

The school decides to contract VIA, a software that helps identify student’s educational needs in a fast and effective way.

The teachers and their parents answer a questionarie of 70 questions based on standardized tests. An analysis is made and presented to the school, to identify those students who have high risk to present special education needs, those who have moderate risk and those who have no risk.

With these results the teacher, the parents and the psychologist, determine for example, that this student needs special attention in the area of reading and writing, since he got a 3 in his final classification which means he has high risk to present a learning difficulty . They all develop an individualized working plan for the student and carry out the strategies suggested for the teachers and the parents to support the student.

With VIA the teacher will know student’s needs and will be able to prepare balanced working tables to promote cooperative learning. She can also modify them whenever she/he needs it throughout the year.

The teacher will also be able to know since the first day of school her classroom’s needs and will be able to use the appropriate strategies to support the whole group. In this classroom, she will need to use the strategies suggested related with executive functions, attention and learning difficulties.

A monthly plan with specific strategies for children that have high risk to present any special educational needs is given to the teacher. This strategies can be modified each month or whenever they she thinks its appropriate.

VIA will also allow schools that have more than one classroom per generation to create balanced classrooms for the next school year. With balanced classrooms teachers will be able to cover the whole program for both classrooms.

Finally, the school will be able to have objective data regarding the progress of all students in each of the areas, record them in their files and share them with parents.

In this school, after using VIA, all the students have been understood and supported by their teachers, their parents, their peers and continue their studies.
