Local Authors Struggle for Acceptance as Bookstores Blame Internet and AI Over Decline in Reading
In Nigeria, the education sector is facing numerous challenges that have adverse effects on the economy and the well-being of various stakeholders.
One of the significant challenges is the struggle to maintain and promote quality education in the country.
This situation has led to a decline in patronage for players in the educational sector, causing economic setbacks. Especially players like bookstores, authors, publishers, and school management who are experiencing a decrease in demand for their products and services.
Namse Peter, an advocate, teacher, author, and publisher, has personally witnessed the challenges faced by local authors in marketing their published books. Despite their efforts, they struggle to gain recognition and attract readership.
In an interview, Peter recounts challenges and the need to support national authors to boost productivity and sustain quality education in the country.
However, while lamenting the low patronage of books in the country, Peter urges citizens to patronize books produced by national authors as he pleads for government interventions to reduce the production cost.
Additionally, Peter emphasizes that the news of immoral books in Nigeria is misleading and not reflective of the overall literary landscape.
Sulaiman Abdulkadir, from a well-known progress bookshop in Kaduna, and Gorge Ubuk, a seller of second-hand books, both acknowledge the difficulties they encounter in their businesses.
They point out that the increased usage of artificial intelligence, e-books, and the internet has significantly impacted their traditional sales of books.
