Jewish Mixology with Jhos: The Hanukkah-Inspired "Miraculous Martini" Cocktail | JCCSF
And from your lips he drew a hallelujah! Our resident Maggid and mixologist Jhos shows you how to concoct his delicious and awe-inducing Hanukkah-inspired cocktail, the "Miraculous Martini".
The story of Hanukah includes the clash between a formidable invading enemy—the Assyrian-Greek Empire—and an under-resourced local minority resistance—the Jewish clan nicknamed “The Maccabees”. Against all odds, the Maccabees were able to overpower the much larger and stronger Greek army to reclaim the Temple in Jerusalem. According to Rabbinic legend when the Maccabees entered the Temple they found one unsullied jar of oil, but it miraculously burned for 8 days and nights—long enough for more pure oil to be procured. The Ashkenazi (European) Jewish culinary tradition turned this into an excuse to eat fried foods in observance of the holiday, especially fried potato pancakes slathered with sweet apple sauce. This cocktail is a paean to the Hanukah story in its entirety—the Greeks, oil, and Maccabees are represented by the garnish of a trio of Greek olives impaled on a sword. The backbone of the drink is potato vodka, and of course, this is a spirit-driven cocktail!! It is also delicious, balanced, and intriguing. Enjoy!!
Recipe for the Miraculous Martini ( A Wholistic Hanukah Libation)
1 oz Potato Vodka (I like “Blue Ice”)
1 oz Dry Vermouth (Martini works great for this cocktail)
.5 oz Apple Jack (I recommend Laird’s Bonded)
.25 oz Chartreuse Liqueur
.25 oz Gum Syrup (optional, but gives the drink a silky weight and texture)
5 drops 18.12 Chamomile Bitters (optional)
Garnish—a sword skewer with 3 Greek olives (Kalamata or Chalkidiki for example)
Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass or beaker. Add ice to at least above the liquid level. Stir smoothly—try to avoid aerating the drink—until the drink is very, very, cold. Strain into a Martini or Coupe glass. Lay the sword across the mouth of the glass. Perfection.
