GAME RECAP: Penguins vs. Rangers, Game 1 (05.04.22) | Triple Overtime Thriller

The time has come to compete for the chance to raise the greatest trophy in sports once again. The Penguins started off under enormous pressure from the Rangers. Eventually, that pressure paid off, as Fox was able to get a shot by Penguins' netminder Casey DeSmith in his playoffs debut. Copp scored one early in the 2nd to increase New York's lead to 2-0. Shortly after, however, Jake Guentzel struck for his first of the game. A little over seven minutes after that, Guentzel added his second tally of the contest, knotting things up, 2-2. With his assist on Guentzel's second goal, Sidney Crosby passed Jaromir Jagr and tied Sergei Fedorov for the eighth-most playoff assists in NHL history (124). Kreider, who also had a fantastic regular season, got the Rangers the lead once again, but with under two minutes left in the period, Bryan Rust banged one in on the power play. Things would remain that way for... quite some time. In that 2nd period, the Penguins registered 25 shots on goal, which is the most shots on goal in a single period in franchise history. In the 3rd, the Rangers thought they had the game-winning goal, but it was successfully challenged as goaltender interference by Coach Mike Sullivan. Overtime was on the table. After no goals in the first overtime, the second overtime began. Things were mostly normal, until Casey DeSmith (in the midst of a phenomenal 48-save playoff debut) made his way to the bench and left the game. Louis Domingue entered the net for the Penguins, surviving a sudden Rangers barrage. In the third overtime, things would finally end: John Marino shot the puck from up high, Evgeni Malkin deflected it, and just like that, the Penguins held a 1-0 series lead. The Penguins' 83 shots on goal in this game were the most in a single game (regular season or playoffs) in franchise history. With his OT goal, Evgeni Malkin tied Jaromir Jagr for third place on the Penguins' all-time playoff goals list with 65, and his 13 overtime playoff goals are the most among active players.
