President-elect Joe Biden on Friday said that another round of coronavirus stimulus checks for U.S. families “may be still in play.” Biden said when asked at a press conference to respond to criticism about the new stimulus relief plan revealed this week as a starting point for the latest round of negotiations on Capitol Hill that “he thinks it would be better if they had the $1,200 [payments to families].” He goes on to add that “he understands that $1200 checks may be still in play, but he doesn’t know the specifics yet. He explains how “the whole purpose of this stimulus bill is that they’ve got to make sure people aren’t thrown out of their apartments, lose their homes, are able to have unemployment insurance [that] they can continue to feed their families on as we grow back the economy.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., have backed the bipartisan $908 billion relief plan as a basis for talks with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. On Friday, Pelosi told reporters “there is momentum” toward lawmakers striking a deal. The problem is that the proposal does not include a second $1,200 direct payment to most Americans. Pelosi and Schumer have called for another stimulus check for months as part of trillions in aid they hoped to approve so ultimately they said that they still want to offer improvements to the bill. Some congressional progressives have questioned how much relief this bill would help if it fails to include direct payments or a robust unemployment insurance supplement. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said he would not support a bill unless it included a stimulus check or scrapped Republican demands for a liability shield, according to NBC News. But on the other hand Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., told NBC News she would be open to supporting the package even though she criticized a lack of direct payments.

On Monday, it looked like nothing was going to happen on stimulus, but now with eh bipartisan groups $908B deal it's possible a deal is brokered in a matter of days. This proposal that everyone is talking about right now includes $300 a week in enhanced federal unemployment benefits (there is still a debate about how retroactive this could be, a continued pause on student loan payments, eviction moratorium, another round of money for the Paycheck Protection Program, $16 billion for vaccine development and distribution and Covid-19 testing and tracing, extension of unemployment programs that allowed gig workers to file for unemployment insurance, extension of the program that allows unemployed Americans to get 39 weeks instead of 2, the main concern with this program is that it doesn’t include direct $1200 stimulus checks

And finally Joseph LaVorgna, chief economist of the National Economic Council came out yesterday and spoke on the second stimulus package. He told Yahoo Finance that stimulus negotiations were proceeding, but “they don't believe the recovery at the moment is in jeopardy.” He said that the way he looks at it is that “any assistance will he helpful but a new round of stimulus would be “an insurance policy,”
