Zaila Avant-garde Talks History-Making Win at Scripps National Spelling Bee

Zaila Avant-garde made history Thursday night as the first African American to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The 14-year-old from Louisiana has big dreams to go on to Harvard, study gene editing, and play basketball. Avant-garde has already accomplished so much at a young age. She appeared in a commercial with Stephen Curry and holds three Guinness World Records for dribbling multiple basketballs at once. She joined "Start Your Day" with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss how she prepared for the competition and the support she's received since her history-making victory. To prepare for the competition, she says she trained for two years, studying thousands of words for seven hours each day.
