ISLE OF ARRAN Road Trip | Driving the SOUTH LOOP

Driving the south loop on Scotland’s Isle of Arran visiting Lamlash, Whiting Bay, walking up to and admiring Glenashdale Falls, driving the coastal route to Blackwaterfoot and visiting the Standing Stones on Machrie Moor. ➡️ See more of my videos from SCOTLAND here → https://bit.ly/mwt_UK

I caught the Calmac ferry from Ardrossan on mainland Scotland over to Brodick on the Isle of Arran as part of a three day road trip to explore the island. The journey was around 45 minutes and considering it was a windy day the ride was smooth and enjoyable - if a little bit cold!

The road network on the Isle of Arran looks like the figure of eight and so I decided to tackle the bottom half on day one, driving solo from Brodick clockwise until I completed the first loop - which of course would return me to Brodick. The day was fairly typical of Scotland with sunny spells and torrential downpours and everything in between.

Once I drove off the ferry I turned left and headed for Lamlash, a pretty little village overlooking the sea. There I saw bright beaches, glowing cottages and a pretty little church. I continued on to Whiting Bay, stopping mainly because I liked the name. It’s definitely got a ring to it! Closeby I found a hiking trail up to Kingscross Viking Fort and once the showers stopped I headed up, realising only about half way there that I could have driven much closer and saved myself some time (and energy). The remains of the Viking Fort overlooked Holy Isle which as the crow flies was less than half a mile away.

As quickly as I got back on the road I was off it again, this time to take on a challenging hike up to Glenashdale Falls - a double cascade reportedly the finest on Arran. I took a slight detour on the way down and stopped off at the Giant’s Graves - two historically important tombs with a stunning panoramic coastal view.

Back on the road I enjoyed the scenery and ocean views including Pladda Lighthouse, Arran’s South coastline, Silver Sands Beach, Blackwaterfoot and the imposing cliffs at Drumadoon Point. My search for the Doon Fort didn’t go entirely to plan but it was enjoyable to see the rocky waterfront and grassy hills.

My final stop of the tour was at Machrie Moor where I went in search of some ancient Standing Stones that turned out to be a bit more of a walk than I had planned. Still, it was nice to hear the sound of silence and hang out with some of Arran’s friendliest sheep. All in all an exciting road trip around one half of the island and a taster of things to come.
