LJUBLJANA, SLOVENIA | Walking Tour & History

LJUBLJANA SLOVENIA: I joined a free walking tour in Slovenia‘s capital to get some local insights into the city's history, culture and architecture.

Ljubljana was in full flow when I arrived in the city centre for my walking tour, in fact I was so early I had time to walk around the markets and craft fair where I saw a traditional Slovenian folk band singing and lots of local street food being prepared. It was the weekend so the streets were busy and there was lots going on.

The walking tour of Ljubljana started on time and we learned about the history of the area as well as the city - going back way beyond the Romans and how the Slovenes ended up in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. We talked about Yugoslav times and their battle for independence in the early 1990s.

During the tour we got to see lots of important landmarks in the city including Prešeren Square on the banks of the river and underneath the vibrant Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, better known locally as the pink church. It’s where I found the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje), the Prešeren Monument and some remarkable views up towards Ljubljana Castle.

Other highlights were the pedestrian friendly Dragon Bridge featuring ornaments and statues of dragons, the 18th century baroque style Ljubljana Cathedral and the historical parks and pavilions of Congress Square. The tour concluded with a walk through the Jewish quarter and a visit to City Hall.

As the evening came I saw a completely different side to the city and as the shops closed and bars opened it was clear that the atmosphere had changed. Take a look at the vlog to see what Ljubljana looks like after dark!

I enjoyed my walk around Ljubljana and it was good to learn about the city and see its many historical sites.
