Mix Tutorial 1 (introduction)

Welcome to part 1 of the brand new Mix Tutorial series. This could be perfect for you if you're just starting, just bought your first DJ set (or controller) and you've been playing with your music for a while, but now you feel that it's time to take it to the next level and learn how to mix and become a good DJ.

In this tutorial series I'm going to teach you the basics and show you all the ingredients you need to make a good mix.

What is mixing? When I started I thought it was all about beat matching, because that's the first thing you learn. After a while I found out that there are a lot of other important things that play a big part in creating a 'good' mix;

- Knowing your music is important. Make sure you know the songs that you are going to use in a mix. This will prevent unpleasant surprises during a mix.

- Know how to count music. Learn about beats, bars and phrases in my special tutorial video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFcml2J5ElE

- Learn how to beatmatch. Even if you have DJ software with the SYNC function (to beatmatch automatically) it's always better to be able to beatmatch by ear as well. The SYNC function isn't always accurate and doesn't work with all types of music (for example live music). You might also find out that beat matching by ear can be a lot of fun!

- Know your equipment. Learn how to use the EQ section and the effects. The EQ is essential when it comes to making transitions sound better because it allows you to adjust the levels of the low, mid and high tones of the music. If you would not use the EQ and play two songs together, it's not going to sound as good.

There are a lot more ingredients to make a great mix (like timing, key, song selection, etc), but in the first video's I will start with the basics.
