The story of MIG 31 Firefox

"Firefox," released in 1982, was not just another action flick. Directed by and starring the legendary Clint Eastwood, this film was based on the gripping 1977 novel by Craig Thomas. At its heart was the creation of a mythical super fighter: the MiG-31 Firefox.

In the film, Eastwood plays Mitchell Gant, a retired U.S. Air Force pilot, who finds himself on a perilous mission: stealing a highly advanced Soviet fighter aircraft, the MiG-31, code-named "Firefox." But this isn't just any aircraft; it's a machine of sheer technological marvel, equipped with weaponry straight out of science fiction and stealth capabilities to make it virtually invisible to radar.

To bring this fictional marvel to life, the filmmakers spared no expense. Four large-scale replicas were meticulously crafted for the production. One of these was a massive full-scale model, measuring a staggering 66 feet long, 44 feet wide, and 20 feet high. Built from the skeleton of a radio station broadcast antenna, this beast was capable of taxiing at speeds of 30 to 40 mph.

Another full-scale replica was designed for scenes requiring motion. Mounted on a motion platform, it simulated the movements of flight while remaining safely grounded. These replicas allowed for dynamic shots of the aircraft in action, from hair-raising takeoffs to heart-pounding landings.

But it wasn't just about the big boys. Miniature models were also created for the film's aerial sequences. These smaller-scale marvels were used for distant shots, dogfights, and complex maneuvers that would be difficult or dangerous to film with full-sized aircraft. Mounted on rigs and filmed against blue screens, they seamlessly blended into the action-packed scenes.

Special effects models were crafted to depict the MiG-31's most awe-inspiring features, from its thought-controlled weapons system to its stealth capabilities. These models, with retractable wings, opening weapon bays, and illuminated cockpit displays, added to the film's visual spectacle.

The filming took place in 1981 across various locations, from the bustling streets of Vienna and London to the vast expanses of Montana and Greenland's Thule Air Force Base. Hollywood aerial cinematographer Clay Lacy brought the skies alive in his Learjet 23, capturing breathtaking aerial sequences that were integrated into the film.

And what happened to these magnificent creations after the cameras stopped rolling? The original scale model made by Gregory Jein found its place in history, now on display at the Warner Bros. Museum, a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship that brought the MiG-31 Firefox to life.
