Learjet crash landing at Mumbai Airport (VT-DBL)

On the 14th of September 2023, a Learjet 45 operated by VSR Ventures with the registration VT-DBL and serial number 45-404 crash-landed at approximately 17:04 local time while attempting to land on runway 27 at Mumbai-Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in India.

Eyewitnesses and available photo and video footage of the accident reveal that at least one of the aircraft's wings separated during the impact, resulting in a localized fire. The fuselage of the aircraft broke apart, ultimately coming to rest next to the runway, specifically near taxiway Whiskey. Onboard the aircraft were six passengers and two crew members, all of whom sustained injuries but thankfully survived the crash.

In the aftermath of the incident, airport operations were temporarily halted for over an hour. The runway was reopened for operations at 18:47.

The ill-fated Learjet had departed from Visakhapatnam International Airport earlier in the afternoon.

Weather conditions at the time of the landing were extremely adverse, characterized by heavy rain showers, poor visibility (less than one kilometer), and low-hanging clouds. Video footage of the Learjet's approach shows it descending steeply and in a slight right bank. An investigation is currently underway to determine the precise cause of this unusual flight attitude, with poor weather conditions being considered as a potential contributing factor.
